bull-shark.jpgI dived once on the S.S. Yongala ship wreck on the Great Barrier Reef.  Just to give you some background on the wreck with is quite famous in Australia, it is a grave yard wreck as 121 passengers died on it when it went down.  You used to be able to see the bones of the dead people through the portholes but they are all covered with coral now.

Anyway, having nearly finished an amazing dive, as I was doing the required safety stop I saw my husbands eyes go wide in amazement so I turned around and came almost face to face with a massive bull shark!  Bull sharks are among the four species considered the most dangerous to humans, and is probably the most dangerous of the four species ( I took that bit from Wikipedia!).  I held my breaths for as long as I could and my heart was racing – I got through nearly a quarter of a tank of air just in that 20 seconds!  When we got back onto the boat we were told that they call the shark ‘Scarface’ as it had a chunk taken out of the side of it.

diving_with_reef_sharks.jpgScuba diving in Thailand is great! Diving with sharks is even better! I booked a day dive to “shark Point”   near Phuket. A dive site famous for its variety of marine life, colourful soft corals, sea fans and leopard sharks.  We got to “shark point” around 11am.  Upon reaching just 12 feet below the surface level, I started seeing the vast marine life of shark point. Once at the bottom of the 45 foot dive site, i came in contact with my first leopard shark. These are considered harmless sharks but in my mind a shark is a shark! A school of about 25 were relaxing at the bottom of the reef. We could swim amongst  them and none caused any harm. Diving with reef sharks was amazing and I definitely recommend it!

ImageIf you like turtles and sharks, great drop offs and reefs to snorkel then you will love Sipadan. This island off the east coast of Malaysian Borneo used to boast the worlds best shore dive. About 10m/30ft from the beach the wall drops to 680m/2200ft. Since 2005 the island is a marine park and is protected from dynamite fishermen and over diving by the Malaysian Navy and Sabah Parks officials. Divers must stay on close by Mabul or take day trips from the coast town of Semporna.

deep_sea_fishing.jpgThe increasing popularity of deep sea fishing in United Arab Emirates is an extension of the regions seafaring past. There are many tour companies and operators, even beach hotels that organize deep sea fishing activity for the whole family, group, organizations, company outings etc. not just in the UAE but also in Oman and  Africa.

Some companies tailored their destinations to put together specialized trip targeting their client’s choice of game fish, from sailfish of Dubai to marlin in Oman. Deep sea fishing on these areas is good when the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf start to cool down, which is around the month of October.

People will pay a lot of money for battling against the big fish of the sea. Deep sea fishing is an exciting sport and a very lucrative one. Every deep sea fishing boats in the UAE is equipped with a number of fishing rods that are threaded with bait, small fish or large colourful lures, brightly decorated fake fish.

It takes some time to thread all the bait but once that task is completed, all that can be done is waiting. It looks relatively simple, but with as many as nine different lines trailing through the water, if you don't know what you're doing, things can get very tangled up.

But deep sea fishing is not just for the experts. Most of the big hotels and yacht clubs run deep sea fishing trips that cater for tourists who may have no fishing experience. Most trips last about four hours and cover about 20 miles. People can expect to catch barracuda and hammour rather than the more challenging sailfish.

Many tourists are drawn to the sport because it take them out of their ordinary lives and make them feel as if they are living an adventure. Deep sea fishing is exciting. However, professional deep sea fishing in the United Arab Emirates is just not simple fishing, the boat has to be manoeuvred in a certain wau.

For the family the water is an excellent place to teach and learn. However, the key to gaining the benefits of fishing with the family is to prepare before you even head to the water. Take the time to teach your child the basics of casting, reeling, troubleshooting and about fish in the backyard before actually heading out to the water.
