She was pitching and turning, my stomach heaving side to side with every roll. Oh why, why did I ever think that sea-life was all about gallantry and courage. There was no heroism in retching my guts out till there was no more while the wind howled through my ears in the pitch of dark. The thunder gods roared just as another streak of lightning hit the deck and I saw yet another huge wave ready to hit the deck. ‘Duck’, I shouted to my mates even as the heavy body of water hit the decks and the three masted Barque sail ship bucked and rolled as if to make a getaway from the unending pounding she was taking in the midst of this storm in the Pacific Seas.

Saling in Fiji

act-sailing.jpgA holiday in Fiji some years ago included a few days on a small outlying island resort. The ferry taking us there had rope-netting (with gaps about one foot square) slung on one side between two outrigger masts. The netting skimmed the water’s surface, occasionally dipping up to one foot below the surface especially when some of us sat "in it".

Because my partner dared me to, I spent half of the two-hour journey in this netting. I am not a swimmer, so I was totally terrified for all that time. It was only when I was on dry land, that he casually mentioned that that was the ONLY stretch of water in the whole Fiji group of 100+ islands which was frequented by sharks.

I couldn’t help thinking, he was sending me another sort of message!

white_water_rafting.jpgWhitewater rafting in United Arab Emirates  is not as popular as rafting in South America, Nepal, USA and Canada. The reason being there are not much rivers or other bodies of water in the country to navigate using a raft.

White rafting is an adrenaline sport as well as a very challenging recreational activity.  The development of this activity as a leisure sport has become popular since the mid 1970s. Rafting usually uses a raft to navigate a river and other bodies of water. This activity is done on whitewater or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers.

Rafts were originally the simplest form of man’s transportation in water and were then made of several logs, planks or reeds which were fastened together. Today, inflatable boats are used as rafts which were later adopted by the military for beach assaults. It consists of very durable, multi-layered rubberized or vinyl fabrics with several independent air chambers. Its length varies between 3.5 m (11 ft) and 6 m (20 ft), the width between 1.8 m (6 ft) and 2.5 m (8 ft).

Whitewater rafting can be a dangerous sport, especially if basic safety precautions are not observed. Both commercial and private trips have seen their share of injuries and fatalities, though private travel has typically been associated with greater risk. Depending on the area, legislated safety measures may exist for rafting operators.

Whitewater rafting in United Arab Emirates may not be popular now and in the future, otherwise of course, there are going to be manmade bodies of water appropriate for this activity in the future.

how_i_learned_to_go_with_the_flow_article_adrenaline_sports_live.jpg Author: Marlene Lambert

A dear friend invited me to join her on a whitewater rafting trip; a women’s river retreat. I had never taken a vacation like this before. I was hesitant: It was a lot of money, and I wasn’t sure about sharing my vacation with a dozen strangers in addition to my friend. She twisted my arm well enough, and I decided to give it a try.  Little did I know then how much this adventure was an investment in my future.
