Last 24th November 2007, the Archery World Cup Final was held in
Dubai, United Arab Emirates. During the event, several archers participated
from different parts of the world such as, China, Korea, Russia, USA, Great
Britain, Italy, France, Sweden, Mexico, El Salvador and Brazil etc.
Historically, archery has been used in hunting and combat. Since
then, archery evolved into a sport, based on precision using bow and arrows at
targets. Archery became an Olympic sport and many people practice archery
for recreation or to aim for professional medals and honours.
During the Archery World Cup Finals in Dubai, it was the first
time that the athletes were shooting over a floating platform in a lake at the
Madinat Jumeirah Souk, close to the famous 7-star hotel Burj Al Arab. There were many TV channels from all over the world that featured live coverage
of the Archery World Cup Final.
Although archery is beginning to gain
its momentum and popularity in the UAE as a sport, there aren’t a whole
lot of people that enjoy shooting and archery in the country. But if you happen
to be one of them, you’ll be pleased to know that there are a few places where
you can practise your skills with archery, and other similar sports.
If you are in Dubai you can join Dubai
Archer’s Club whose members usually gather at Dubai Country Club or Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa Shooting Club.
If you happen to be in Sharjah
you can also practice at Sharjah Wanderer’s Golf Club. Hatta Fort Hotel at
Dubai and Oman’s border also provides an archery range.
