The Dubai Water Sports Association IS the
Ski Club. History The history of this association can be trace back 21 years ago. A small group of expats keen on water skiing got together at weekends close to the Garhoud Bridge on the Creek. One National youngster also enjoyed the sport and so with his help and some assistance from the Ruler (Sheikh) of Dubai the site was relocated to where the ski club exists today. That young UAE national still remains as Commodore of DWSA and still supports the Ski Club to this day. The location near the 'dead end' of the creek provided a quiet spot where water sports enthusiasts could do their stuff - away from the madding crowd. It was pretty basic in those days - no fresh water, no electricity.... car batteries were used to run the disco, an old container to store the boat and the cold liquid kept in members coolers! The original club house, designed by one of the members, was built with funding from the Sheikh and the keen UAE National and so the DWSA was truly born. A slalom course and jump were installed and as time went on skiing competitions were staged to put the skills of local skiers to the test competitively and pretty soon the Gulf Championships were an annual event. This attracted many skiers from other Middle East countries and the Gulf Championship became the largest three event water ski competition in the Region. The Championships brought top UK water skiing talent to help, judge and train the skiers, at the same time putting Dubai water skiing on the map outside the Middle East. As time passed the swimming pool was installed, the Jacuzzi was fitted, the trees were planted - mainly using the sweat of committed members.... and the Gulf Championships got bigger, drawing sponsorship from very well known companies like Swatch, Gulf Craft, Marlboro, 555, Hyatt Regency, Gulf Air and British Air. Today the sport of Wakeboarding has grown to dizzy heights and most water sports facilities worldwide have seen their younger enthusiasts showing more interest in this great sport.... DWSA is no different. Wakeboarding has certainly taken its place as the most popular water sport at the club - hey, who are we to argue with the new generation! The spirit of the DWSA hasn't changed, even if the sports have changed, we are still committed to provide the members of DWSA the experience of enjoying their chosen water sport - in the same way we have for all these years - a chilled out way!
